一人一信 抗议CNN Jack Cafferty的辱华言论
To CNN and Jack Cafferty,

In Situation Room aired on April 9th, CNN commentator Mr. Jack Cafferty insulted Chinese people with his racist comments by saying, "I think they (Chinese) are basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they’ve been for the last 50 years." As an ordinary Chinese, I was stunned and shocked!

Chinese people well understand the US's upheld freedom of speech and fully respect Mr. Jack cafferty's personal political opinion. However, What he said has completely crossed the bottom line considering Mr. Cafferty's identity as a public figure and professional journalist. No Chinese people with dignity can ever stand such vituperation targeting the Chinese race.

Later in a brief statement on April, 15, CNN claimed that by "goons and thugs" Mr. Cafferty meant for the Chinese government. This "apology" avoids the important points and dwells on the trivialis which is even more unacceptable. First of all, in his speech, Mr. Cafferty repeatedly mentioned the word "China" and "Chinese" with no reference to the Chinese government. Secondly, he used the plural form as "goons and thugs", which clearly demonstrated that, by "they", he meant for the whole Chinese race. Last but not the least, this statement zeroed in on the Chinese government and this farfetched sophism is actually another attack to the Chinese race. How is it possible not to hurt the people's feeling while attacting their government?

For the above mentioned, I write to condemn and exclaim my protest against CNN and Mr. Jack Cafferty here in this letter!

It has been only 20 some years since China's reform and opening up, and Chinese understand that people from other countries still hold questions and misunderstandings toward this faraway oriental country. However, this by no means indicates that some people can make their tougue run riot and attack China and its people irresponsibly. No man with rational consciousness should be selectively blind facing obvious facts even though he may not know much about China.

Take the United States for example, for years, the Chinese immigrants have always been the most law-respecting and friendly group in the society. Mr. Cafferty should probably know that, President Bush rewarded the the Chinese flight attendant Deng Yuewei's family after "9.11" for her brave performance during the hijack, calling her "the American Hero". And that the Chinese student Zeng Zhe lost his life after saving several people at the World Trade Center during that day. He was remembered on the National EMS Memorial Service, the second person in American history. Mr. Cafferty should probably also know that during the Virginia Tech massacre last year, a female Chinese teacher stopped the criminal from rushing in by keeping the door closed and saved all her students. Since when the kindhearted, devoted and peace-loving Chinese became "goons and thugs" as Jack Cafferty described?!

I believe that, as a professional political commentator, Mr. Jack Cafferty is not ignorant. And he does not suffer from amnesia. The only reason that he opnely insulted Chinese people is his racial discrimination against the Chinese race! What he said is shameless harm toward the Chinese people, especially American Chinese. It has already caused very bad influences. And this has already seriously harmed the friendship between Chinese people and American people.

It has took years of efforts for CNN to establish its great public reliance and a sound reputation. However, Mr. Jack Cafferty absolutely humiliated CNN, and the whole US media by his irrational attack toward the Chinese people! How should a racist be qualified to criticise others as "goons and thugs"?

We demand that CNN and Mr. Jack Cafferty put their arrogance and prejudice away, and make an open formal apology to all Chinese people worldwide.

Chinese communities from the globe would bring collective accusation against CNN and Mr. Jack Cafferty for slander, and press our claim for compensation, if cordial and prompt apology fails to show up on this issue.

"Well, I don't know if China is any different, but our relationship with China is certainly different. We're in hawk to the Chinese up to our eyeballs because of the war in Iraq, for one thing. They're holding hundreds of billions of dollars worth of our paper. We also are running hundred of billions of dollars worth of trade deficits with them, as we continue to import their junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food and export, you know, jobs to places where you can pay workers a dollar a month to turn out the stuff that we're buying from Wal- Mart.
